Supporting Struggling Adolescent Readers in the Secondary Classroom

National data suggests that more and more adolescents are entering into middle and high school not reading on grade level. The data has only been amplified in recent years due to the learning loss contributed by the challenge’s schools have faced during the pandemic. While much of the focus around the Science of Reading has been on its impact on early literacy, there are also significant implications for teachers and adolescents in secondary education.

In this session we will discuss the current research on adolescent literacy to examine evidence-based instructional practices designed to target older adolescents with reading difficulties. These instructional practices will not only support struggling readers, but are aligned to effective literacy practices for all students in tier 1 instruction.
