Jennifer is a Science Education doctoral student who teaches biology in FWISD.  Improving scientific literacy is a focal point of her teaching and she has found that student scientific literacy cannot improve without improving basic reading skills as well.  Her research focus centers around developing practical and relevant reading activities for science teachers.

Bridging ELAR reading strategies with science-specific disciplinary reading

Day 1, Session 1 - July 25, 12:30-1:30pm

This session will provide teachers with resources and strategies to adapt the tools and methods already being taught in ELAR classrooms to science disciplinary texts to increase content understanding and provide relevant examples of science concepts that your students can identify with.

Painlessly incorporating reading into a science unit

Day 2, Session 1 - July 26, 12:30-1:30pm

This session will demonstrate how to seamlessly incorporate reading into your content units! We will use online resources to find non-fiction texts, such as magazine or news articles, then incorporate them into a unit of study to provide real life examples of science in action while providing students with the opportunity to practice and improve reading skills!
