TCU's Center for Public Education & Community Engagement hosted the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 5, 2024, in the Brown-Lupton University Union Ballroom. The event highlighted the skills of 25 young spellers from second through eighth grades.
Tanya Kadaru from George Dawson Middle School was named the champion of the TCU Regional Spelling Bee, with Tarun Deepak from Indian Springs Middle School as the runner-up.
Kadaru is set to represent the North Texas region and vie for more than $50,000 at the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee this summer in Washington, D.C.
The regional champion was awarded a $300 cash prize and a $500 travel stipend, while the runner-up received a $200 cash prize.
Since 2011, TCU's College of Education has organized and sponsored the regional bee, enabling thousands of students to compete in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
The regional bee emphasizes academic excellence and community engagement, nurturing a passion for language and learning among participants. This year's competition drew representatives from 524 schools across 25 areas in North Texas.
Adam Hile, Ed.D., director of field experience and community partnerships, noted the bee's importance: "It's a great way to give back to the schools in our region and support learning," highlighting the competition's role in enhancing spelling proficiency, vocabulary development, and correct English usage.
As TCU continues its support for this enriching event, the College of Education reaffirms its dedication to educational opportunities and the celebration of young achievers in the community and beyond.
